Holland America Line Goes 'On Location' With New Activity Program To Immerse Guests In The Culture And Activities Unique To Each Cruising Region

Local experts bring destination-centric experiences on board

SEATTLE, May 15, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- From steel drum lessons in the Caribbean to tai chi on deck with a master in Asia, Holland America Line is bringing local culture and cuisine on board like never before through its new "On Location" program. The itinerary sets the scene for guests to indulge in localized experiences that make time on board as culturally enriching as visiting the ports of call.

On each cruise, a Location Team from the region either visits the ship or sails on board and shares unique, personal insights with guests through lectures, demonstrations and performances. They provide information about local customs, the way of life, off-the-beaten-path port highlights and secrets that only a local would know.

"Our guests are global explorers, and the On Location program enables us to offer exclusive and intimate cultural experiences that become an indelible part of the overall cruise experience," said Richard Meadows , executive vice president of sales, marketing and guest programs for Holland America Line. "With the On Location events on board, our guests will enjoy ports of call with a deeper understanding of local customs and the unique nuances of the area."

Through the end of the year, the On Location program will roll out across the fleet in destinations around the globe. Each region will feature specialists and experiences that are deeply connected to that part of the world such as stargazing with an astronomer in the South Pacific, learning to tango with a professional in Argentina or playing a didgeridoo in Australia. For example, guests on cruises to Hawaii might learn how to hula, make a fresh flower lei or get a ukulele lesson from a local, while cruisers on voyages to Mexico are entertained with an authentic mariachi band during a Mexican fiesta on deck.

When it comes to getting a taste of local flavor, nothing brings a culture to life more than live entertainment. From fiddlers in the Canadian Maritimes and Balinese dancers in Indonesia to the drums of Polynesia and the gauchos of Argentina, through the On Location initiatives Holland America Line will enhance its program of showcasing the finest entertainment from around the world.

On Location experiences won't stop with the onboard enrichment and entertainment programs. Guests on each itinerary will be delighted with an array of regionally focused food and drink options before even stepping ashore. Each day Holland America chefs will create local dishes with regionally sourced items. Food lovers can indulge in a bowl of freshly steamed mussels after a cool autumn day in Canada or get adventurous in Scotland and sample haggis. Bars and lounges will feature famous local drinks like a caipirinha in Brazil, limoncello in Italy, ouzo in Greece or sake in Japan.

Holland America Line 's award-winning Culinary Arts Center will also come alive like never before as visiting chefs from along the route add local flavor to cooking demonstrations and hands-on classes. Guests can prepare the perfect salmon in Alaska, roll sushi in Asia or enhance dishes with the spices of the Caribbean. Wine lovers can pair food with the ideal bottle as experts from the vineyards in which they are produced host tastings throughout Europe, Australia and Chile.

And guests should not be surprised if they are greeted by shipboard staff with a bonjour, hola, ciao or konnichiwa rather than "hello," depending on the region where the ship is sailing.

Holland America and Seabourn Employees Team Up to Fight Hunger with Northwest Harvest

Seattle, Wash., Dec. 12, 2012 — Holland America Line President and CEO and Seabourn Chairman Stein Kruse joined employees during the Seattle-based cruise companies’ fifth annual community giving week at Northwest Harvest, an organization that feeds the hungry in Washington State.

As part of annual holiday activities, more than 400 Holland America Line and Seabourn employees helped process and prepare more than 100,000 pounds of food for area food banks, shelters and meal programs. During the week of Dec. 3 through 7, employees volunteered for morning and afternoon shifts at the Kent, Wash., distribution center for Northwest Harvest. Kruse also presented Northwest Harvest with a monetary and grocery card donation totaling more than $2,700 on behalf of the cruise lines and their employees.

“Holland America Line and Seabourn are committed to being responsible community partners, and we’re honored to support a local organization that does such important work,” said Kruse. “Northwest Harvest affects so many lives and we commend them for ensuring that those who need it have a warm meal and don’t go to bed hungry.”

The 2012 donation marks the fifth consecutive year that Holland America Line and Seabourn have supported Northwest Harvest. Since 2008, approximately 2,500 employees have volunteered at the Kent location, in addition to giving food and monetary donations. Northwest Harvest executives estimate that company employees have helped sort more than half a million pounds of food over the years.

Northwest Harvest is Washington’s only statewide hunger relief agency. The organization supplies free food to a network of nearly 350 independent food banks and meal programs throughout the state. Relying on contributions from individuals, businesses, foundations and other organizations, 93 percent of Northwest Harvest’s total budget goes to food distribution. Their fast-paced, highly interactive, audience-participation and family-friendly shows involve lots of drumming on objects ranging from 12-foot-tall ladders to low-tech drum kits suspended upside-down at center stage as well as sounds produced by household appliances (vacuum cleaners, fans) and power tools (circular saws, drills).

"This exciting show has been a big hit with our guests and is a unique type of entertainment experience in the industry."

Upon entering the ship's main show lounge, audience members receive a drumstick and a special instrument to join in creating the music and energy that has made Recycled Percussion Las Vegas' most interactive act. The band showcases their extreme talents while featuring a variety of musical genres, from rock n' roll to today's hits.

To accommodate the show, Holland America installed the elaborate "Great Wall of Percussion," a suspended 3,000-pound set that has four drum kits created from cans and recycled buckets. The band is strapped into seats at the drum kits and perform as the wall rotates from upright to upside-down.

Cruise passenger vanishes from ship

A 71-year old female passenger has disappeared from Holland America's Veendam. It took the ship's crew 5 days to discover that she was missing and to report the situation to law enforcement. He whereabouts are still unknown.Examiner.com's, Marty Harris reports on missing passenger . . .

A 71-year old female passenger aboard Holland America’s Veendam has apparently walked off the ship while in a port of call and simply never returned.

The Veendam was in operating a cruise to Canada and New England that departed from Montreal on September 29. According to reports, the elderly passenger was last seen on September 30. However, she was not discovered missing until October 4, when the ship arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

It is not clear if she simply disembarked from the ship while in a port of call and failed to re-board prior to the ship sailing away. Security officers did not see the woman leave the ship and the woman’s location aboard the ship has not been captured on the ship’s surveillance cameras, or at least no video footage of the woman has surfaced yet.

Falkland Islands 2012/13 cruise ship season brings new luxury visitors

Photo: King Penguin Wikipedia
If you have the opportunity and the free time to take a South American cruise, by all means do it.  You will experience the Four Seasons all in a two week span of time and view sites you have never thought existed.  One of my favorite places to visit is the Falkland Islands.  This self contained society is unique and diverse.  Their work ethics, the love of their land and the way of life is refreshing and healthy.   Watching thousands of King Penguins wondering their homeland and learning how the people live in this remote area of the world, is truly amazing, it is a place to see not just to read about.  My favorite day was wondering around and suddenly without warning, one King Penguin was also wondering, giving me the impression that he too was learning geography and the way of life in people.

Here are some ideas and a variety of vessels you can choose from.

MY Sherakhan visiting February
 MY Sherakhan Photo:  en.mercopress.com
Luxury super yacht MY Sherakhan, is one of four vessels new to the Falkland Islands visiting in the 2012/13 season beginning next month. More often spotted in the Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas, she also ventures further afield to Patagonia, Antarctica, French Polynesia, Asia, and Panama.

Regatta (Prestige Cruises) Ocean Diamond (Quark) and Arcadia (P&O) will also pay inaugural visits.

The season will begin gently with the first vessel, Ushuaia arriving in Stanley on October 6, carrying 84 passengers and returning on October 20.

Two of the smaller class of vessels Polar Pioneer and Ocean Nova will also visit later in the month, with the far larger Costa Romantica planning to drop anchor in the Islands on October 27.

Gay Cruise Ship Turned Away by Morocco Docks in Spain

Nieuw Amsterdam.jpg
Photo from Latino Foxnews
The cruise ship Nieuw Amsterdam, on its present voyage catering to a gay clientele, docked Sunday in the southern Spanish port of Malaga after Moroccan authorities prohibited it from making its scheduled port of call in Casablanca.

The vessel, carrying 1,564 passengers and 869 crew members, docked about 7:25 a.m. and was scheduled to depart from Malaga later in the day, Malaga Port Authority spokesmen told Efe.

The RSVP Vacations travel agency, which specializes in organizing tourist trips for gay and lesbian customers, said Saturday in a letter to its clients that its agent in the port of Casablanca had reported that "the authorities have cancelled the scheduled July 1 visit despite having previously confirmed it."

The agency said that they considered this to be "disappointing news" and added that the decision was made after the "visit of a gay cruise ship" turned into "a public and potentially controversial matter."
