The board Chairman Walter Revell stated “I am delighted to welcome Stella to our board of directors,” he added. “Stella’s experience overseeing a remarkable collection of global spirit brands and with successful marketing and brand building gives her a unique perspective that’s an excellent complement to the diverse talents of our other board members.”

Stella David's background features roles such as CEO of William Grant & Sons, where she steered the growth of the business from 2009 to 2016, with a focus on developing brand awareness, including the renowned names of Glenfiddich and Hendrick’s Gin, which generated a worldwide expansion into new markets, in addition to certain acquisitions.

Off Radar Comment
Our understanding is that Stella David was recruited by NCLH to provide them with strategic and marketing value to position the company towards sustained growth. In essence, another key appointment for Frank Del Rio, president and CEO of NCLH.

2016 is earmarked to be a breakthrough year for Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings

The emerging charismatic leader of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) Frank Del Rio has every reason to be confident with the outlook for 2016. In the first instance momentum of bookings moving into 2016 are robust, surpassing NCLH' own 11% capacity growth. Moreover, pricing is up in parallel across all 3 brands, featuring a 12% longer booking trend.
The first few months may yet prove to be challenging for the following 2 reasons:
  1. The Pride of America, NCL's highest performing vessel will go into drydock
  2. The Norwegian Epic's is expected to earn lower yields in Europe during low season compared to its peak season during Caribbean deployment in 2015.
NCLH's long-range target is increasing net yields from 3% to 4% in years when new ships are introduced. On this basis the following  new builds will come into service in 2016:
  • Oceania Cruises: Sirena
  • Regent Seven Seas Cruises: Seven Seas Explorer
  • The first complete year of operations for Norwegian Escape.
In fact the Norwegian Escape is proving to be twice as productive in revenue terms as other vessel, thereby performing record bookings for NCL and exceeding the expectations of the company. Frank Del Rio even went onto state that "Pound for pound or, rather, ton for ton, the offering on Norwegian Escape will impress the most discerning travelers".

NCL plan to deploy the Norwegian Bliss to China

It has been well reported within the Cruise Industry that China will become the second largest source market to North America by 2017. This may perhaps be overstated as it fails to consider the growth in Europe, especially Germany and the UK.

However, suffice to say the Chinese market is growing rapidly and is fuelled by Costa Cruises, Royal Caribbean and C Trip.

Enter Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH), whereby in a statement to investors Wells Fargo Securities suggested that the Norwegian Bliss will be the first of potentially multiple HCLH ships to be deployed to China.

Moreover, the Wells Fargo analyst namely Tim Conder reportedly indicated that NCLH will soon update its China strategy.

Apart from the Bliss. there are opportunities for both Oceania and Regent in China, however this is likely to originate from mainly North American passengers.

Adds Stingray Encounter, Fate of the Fancy Snorkel Adventure and Lighthouse Beach Bar presented by Patron to Private Island

Norwegian Cruise Line announced today that a new Stingray Encounter and Fate of the Fancy Snorkel Adventure are now available on Great Stirrup Cay, the line's 250-acre private island in the Bahamas. In addition, coming soon is a brand new Lighthouse Beach Bar presented by Patron. The launch of these three brand new experiences marks more exciting additions to the island as part of the ongoing $30 million enhancement project.

Located inside Bertram's Cove, on the right hand side of the main beach, the Stingray Encounter invites guests to interact with 18 specially-trained stingrays in an enclosed area. This exciting and unique excursion introduces guests to these smooth and graceful creatures. Each of the stingrays has a name and its own unique personality, and guests will enjoy feeding, watching and holding them, for the perfect photo opportunity. Also included in the Stingray Encounter experience is use of a mask, snorkel and snorkel vest so that guests can peer below the surface to examine the rays up close. The hour-long excursion includes 45-minutes of interaction with the rays and is $29 per adult and $19 per child.

Norwegian is also launching a new snorkel trail experience called, "Fate of the Fancy Snorkel Adventure," for guests to enjoy during their time on Norwegian's private island. Snorkeling is one of the most popular activities on the island and Norwegian has now enhanced that experience with the snorkel trail.

Located near the Stingray Encounter in Bertram's Cove, the Fate of the Fancy Snorkel Adventure is the first private island snorkel trail to depict an actual legend as it portrays the tale of a shipwreck. As the legend goes, "The Fancy," sailing from Nassau, Bahamas in 1696, encountered a mythical creature named Lusca that was half-shark, half-octopus. It is believed that Lusca was responsible for the ship disappearing near the Berry Islands, the location of Great Stirrup Cay. Guests can explore discover and look for clues underwater that lead to the treasure that the Fancy was carrying, highlighted by 17 different underwater scenes that depict the shipwreck and Lusca's legend, including cannons, a sunken piano, treasure chests, swords and more.

Developed in conjunction with IDEA Inc., an Orlando-based company with experience in developing theme park experiences, the Fate of the Fancy Snorkel Adventure features some authentic artifacts that are more than 300 years old. In addition, all of the artifacts are eco-friendly and will stimulate additional marine life in the area.

To experience the snorkel trail, guests can rent snorkel equipment at a rate of $29 per adult or $15 per child for the entire day. Guests wishing to experience both the Fate of the Fancy Snorkel Adventure and the Stingray Encounter during their time on the island can purchase a combination package that includes both tours at a discounted price of $49 per adult, a $9 savings, and $29 per child, a $5 savings.

Norwegian has also partnered with the popular spirits brand, Patron, to introduce a new island bar experience to Great Stirrup Cay called, Lighthouse Beach Bar presented by Patron. This is the first private island bar that Patron has sponsored. It will feature Patron products, as well as a full range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. The bar will be completely redesigned and will be outfitted with beach-inspired décor, Patron branded materials, including bar stools, umbrellas and menu boards, as well as two large flat-screen TVs that will showcase a variety of entertainment from music videos to sporting events. The new bar is set to open in September 2012.

Norwegian was the first cruise line to offer an uninhabited tropical island experience exclusively for its guests. Great Stirrup Cay offers magnificent white sand beaches, majestic palms and calm, pristine waters where an abundance of colorful marine life inhabits the surrounding coral reefs. Additional activities on the island include a Waverunner® tour; a large Hippo Waterslide; eco boat tour; kayaking; parasailing; shopping at the straw market; and more.

Norwegian Sky makes year-round stops at Great Stirrup Cay on her three and four-day cruises from Miami. Norwegian Gem visits Great Stirrup Cay during her seven-day Bahamas & Florida itinerary from New York. Beginning in October, Norwegian Jewel will also stop at Great Stirrup Cay on her seven-day Bahamas & Florida cruises from New York. Norwegian Pearl will also visit Great Stirrup Cay this winter on her seven-day Western Caribbean itinerary from Miami. Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian's newest ship launching next spring, will visit Great Stirrup Cay on seven-day cruises from New York to the Bahamas & Florida beginning in mid-October 2013.

Ships in Sochi for the winter Olympics to help meet the accommodation demands

Warm Greetings from a wet and windy Piraeus on board the Louis owned Thomson Spirit, which like the Louis Olympia (fittingly named) are bound for Sochi.

The concept of Cruise Ships providing emergency accommodation for major events is actually nothing new. The most notable example was back in 2001 when the former Festival Cruises hosted the G8 summit in Genoa. Despite rioting in the streets all delegates were safely contained within the Port.

NCL, Costa and others all have a presence in Sochi and no doubt this 3 week charter period is earning some crucial winter euros. The nearest port with adequate docking is around 40km from the Olympic setting, hence the operation on board is expected to be light during the day with

Qatar will host the world cup in 2022 and accommodation capacity may well be a factor there. As such the authorities are wisely investing in a state of the art Cruise Ship Terminal to support the extra capacity needed. Off Radar Cruise News will track the progress of the development.

The ever growing size of Cruise Ships today are widely considered to be floating Hotels or Resorts and as such their mobility will no doubt play an important role in hosting major events around the world in the future.

Meanwhile, we wish Costa, Louis and NCL every success in Sochi.

UPDATE
Both Louis Cruises vessels are now en-route to Sochi.

Norwegian Breakaway Continues Innovation With Technological Advances

Miami - Mar 6, 2013 ---
Norwegian Cruise Line (NASDAQ: NCLH) today announced several new environmentally-friendly and technologically advanced innovations on its newest ship, Norwegian Breakaway, currently under construction at MEYER WERFT in Papenburg, Germany. Norwegian Breakaway will incorporate a number of emission reducing, energy saving and enhanced safety systems which will be in use when the ship is delivered on April 25, 2013.

"Being environmentally conscious is of the utmost importance to us at Norwegian as we have demonstrated with our state of the art environment practices and technology in place across our fleet," said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line's Chief Executive Officer. "Norwegian Breakaway features a number of environmentally friendly attributes in line with our Eco-Smart Cruising philosophy. We are proud that with these technologies we continue to lead the way in ship innovation and reduction of our carbon footprint."

Emission Reducing Features
- Norwegian Breakaway is equipped with a new generation of ABB XO Azipods, that are smaller and more streamlined, which, together with a new Azipod Dynamic Optimizing system, will enhance steering and turning angles, leading to a saving in fuel and reduction in emissions. The Azipods are also equipped with a featured called an "x-tail," which reduces fuel consumption even further.

- Through Advanced Computional Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations, the underwater hull has been optimised to provide the least resistance for the average speed of the ship's planned itineraries, enhancing the ship's speed/power ratio by 20 percent.

- The ship will also increase its energy efficiency and, therefore, reduce emissions, through the use of the latest generation of silicon-based antifouling paint on the ship's hull.

- Features on the bridge include a trim optimisation system from Eniram that collects data over time and optimises the trim at different loading and speed conditions, while taking weather and wave elements into consideration. In addition, the NAPA voyage optimization system helps to plan the ship's cruise in more intelligent ways, such as taking currents, engine configuration and weather into account.

- Norwegian Breakaway has been outfitted with a new system called Pure Dry that recovers fuel oil from waste oil; thus reducing the amount of waste oil that will be disposed of ashore.

- Heat recovery is another priority in energy savings and, on Norwegian Breakaway, it is implemented on the freshwater and diesel generators. These heat exchangers, along with waste heat exchangers from the main engines, can be used in other sources on board, such as to heat potable water.

- Norwegian is the first cruise line to install a galley energy management system, known as GEM, from Almaco. The system will automatically turn on the ship's ovens at scheduled times, allowing the chefs to better manage their kitchens throughout the day and further increase energy efficiency.

- Norwegian Breakaway includes an advanced remote control system for the staterooms. This system allows for power, air conditioning and lighting to be switched off remotely when guests are not in their staterooms.

- The majority of lighting in the public spaces of Norwegian Breakaway is LED, in order to increase the ship's energy efficiency.

Enhanced Elements

- The ship features an all-new mustering tracking system for both guest and crew mustering via Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs).

- A state-of-the-art water ballast treatment system supplied by Alfa Laval has been installed on Norwegian Breakaway, a first among Norwegian's fleet.

Photo Chef Geoffrey ZakarianWikipedia
Ocean Blue by Geoffrey Zakarian is part of THE WATERFRONT and 678 OCEAN PLACE - three dynamic decks packed with a variety of exciting indoor and outdoor venues that boast a unique connection to the ocean

Miami - Feb 25, 2013 ---
Norwegian Cruise Line announced today that celebrity chef and Food Network star Geoffrey Zakarian will create and oversee the opening of his seafood restaurant, Ocean Blue by Geoffrey Zakarian, on the line's newest ship, Norwegian Getaway, which will sail year-round to the Eastern Caribbean from Miami beginning February, 2014. To celebrate this exciting announcement, Norwegian partnered with Zakarian for an exclusive lunch on Saturday, February 23, 2013, at Soho Beach House in South Beach, during Miami's South Beach Wine & Food Festival, further signifying Norwegian Getaway's strong ties to her Miami home. Geoffrey Zakarian's new restaurant is located in the ship's hub amongst three expansive, action-packed decks called 678 Ocean Place and includes innovative outdoor spaces along The Waterfront, the ship's oceanfront promenade, offering guests an unparalleled experience with a unique connection to the ocean.

The restaurant, Ocean Blue by Geoffrey Zakarian, will bring a luxury seafood dining experience to Norwegian Getaway, utilizing all of the ingredients and techniques that Zakarian employs in his land-based establishments to three distinct dining locations on board: Ocean Blue, Ocean Blue on The Waterfront, Zakarian's take on a boardwalk clam shack, and The Raw Bar, serving crustaceans and wines by the glass. An accomplished chef who has presided over some of the country's top kitchens, he currently has two popular restaurants in New York City ? The Lambs Club and The National; one in Atlantic City ? The Water Club at Borgata; and a highly acclaimed cookbook "Geoffrey Zakarian's Town/Country: 150 Recipes for Life Around the Table." Zakarian emerged victorious in the recent fourth season of Food Network's The Next Iron Chef, Super Chefs. He appears regularly on Iron Chef America, demonstrating a razor-sharp knowledge of culinary techniques in this fast-paced cooking competition. When he's not battling in the kitchen stadium, Zakarian stays busy filming CHOPPED, where he is featured as a recurring judge and highlights his favorite dishes on The Best Thing I Ever Ate.

"Geoffrey is a world-renown chef with an incredible culinary resume and an overall great guy," said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line's chief executive officer. "Our guests sailing from Miami on Norwegian Getaway will experience his world-class cuisine in three unique dining outlets. We couldn't be more excited to be working with Geoffrey and that he is bringing his culinary expertise, creativity and attention to detail to another one of our beautiful ships."

Ocean Blue, the Raw Bar and Ocean Blue on the Waterfront are just three of the incredible dining options that will be found amongst three expansive, flowing decks of dining, bars, entertainment, gaming and more as part of The Waterfront, the ship's oceanfront boardwalk, and 678 Ocean Place, the central hub of the ship. These two areas, lined with shops, restaurants and bars, represent a major innovation in ship design, offering guests an unparalleled experience with a unique connection to the ocean.

It will feature a giant two-story screen, perfect for watching sports and movies, along with miniature bowling, pool and air hockey tables and interactive games.

Norwegian Breakaway Gets A New Boss

Carlo's Bakery
Buddy Valastro, Star of TLC's "Cake Boss," to Open Carlo's Bake Shop on New York's Ship

Miami - Jan 13, 2013 ---
Norwegian Cruise Line announced today that Master Baker Buddy Valastro, star of the popular TLC television series "Cake Boss" and "Next Great Baker," will open an extension of his family business, Carlo's Bake Shop, on the new Norwegian Breakaway, coming to New York City in May 2013.

Featuring all of the delicious treats and confections that the original bakery is known for, Carlo's Bake Shop on Norwegian Breakaway will also give guests the opportunity to pre-order custom specialty cakes for celebrations such as birthdays and anniversaries. For a challenging and fun experience, Carlo's will offer cupcake decorating classes, where guests can learn some of Valastro's tricks of the trade.

"The New York area is known for its outstanding bakeries," said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line's chief executive officer. "As with all features of this new incredible ship, we wanted to bring not just a taste of the region to our guests, but the very best out there. Buddy is known as the ultimate baker, so we knew he was the best choice for our new bakery on Norwegian Breakaway. We are thrilled to welcome Buddy to the Norwegian family."

"Spending time with family is one of the most important things. A cruise is a wonderful opportunity for a family to relax and have fun together and that is one of the reasons why I wanted to bring Carlo's aboard this fantastic cruise ship," said Buddy Valastro. "I am thrilled to begin this partnership with Norwegian Cruise Line and open Carlo's Bake Shop on Norwegian Breakaway, the ultimate ship for families."

Carlo's Bake Shop will be located on Deck 8 in the former Cakestand location.

Featured menu items will include freshly baked cookies, cakes and pies, such as Buddy's famous Oreo, Dark Chocolate Mousse and Purple Groovy Fondant cakes; Italian butter cookies; biscottis; and an assortment of cupcakes. Luscious chocolate and vanilla cannolis, cream-filled lobster tails, and individual treats such as strawberry cheesecake, chocolate truffle and tiramisu round out the menu. The delectable goodies will be available for purchase à la carte.

About Buddy
Buddy Valastro is an accomplished fourth generation baker born into the business owned and operated by his parents since 1910. He grew up in Hoboken, New Jersey in an old-fashioned Italian family. He showed a flair for cake decorating at an early age.

For Valastro, 35, mixing eggs, sugar, butter and flour means a lot more than "making a cake." As a fourth generation baker, it's a constant source of pleasure, pride and creativity. Creating amazing cakes connects Buddy with the memory of his father Buddy Sr. and his extended Italian family history. His talent and passion for the family business, Carlo's Bakery, has earned the straight-talking cake expert the moniker, and TLC TV show, Cake Boss.

In December 2010, TLC premiered the spin-off series, Cake Boss: Next Great Baker, now in its third season, where Buddy challenged bakers from around the country to compete for a chance to work alongside the Valastro family at Carlo's. Proven he's a master when it comes to sweets, in Buddy's third TLC show, Kitchen Boss, he welcomes viewers into his kitchen to demonstrate he's just as skilled at savory items, preparing his family favorite Italian recipes.

MIAMI – January 8, 2013 – Norwegian Cruise Line is starting off 2013 with a “bang” by announcing that Norwegian Breakaway, the line’s newest ship debuting this May in New York City, will feature an exciting fireworks show on every cruise. The environmentally-friendly pyrotechnics display will dazzle guests on the second to last night at sea each week, after the ship departs Bermuda during her summer inaugural season.

Building on the electrifying theme of the ship’s headlining Broadway show, ROCK OF AGES, the awe-inspiring fireworks will be the grand finale of a decadent 1980s-themed deck party and will be set to a specially-selected playlist of classic 1980s hits by artists like Madonna, Devo and Prince.

“All the incredible entertainment and amenities on Norwegian Breakaway are going to wow our guests,” said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line’s CEO. “We wanted one additional element that would really blow them away and this incredible fireworks show is going to take the cruise to a new level of excitement.”

As guests party the night away at the high-energy party under the stars in the open-air Spice H20 venue at the aft of the ship, they will be transported to the 1980s, where music and fun reigned supreme. In a breathtaking finale, a mesmerizing color-filled fireworks show will light up the night sky, right above the ship. The fully-produced show is a visual masterpiece that is set to a playlist of classic 80s hits including “Come on Feel the Noise,” by Quiet Riot; “Whip It,” by Devo; “Cherish,” by Madonna; “Final Countdown,” by Europe; and “Purple Rain,” by Prince. As the fireworks blast to the beat of the music, guests will enjoy an experience unlike anything else offered at sea on New York’s ship.

Epic's entertainment helps cruise ship live up to its name

BY PHIL REIMER, VANCOUVER SUN
JANUARY 5, 2013

It's time for a short land vacation so taking over this week are the Ports and Bows backup team of Bob and Nancy Dunn, reporting on their journey aboard the Norwegian Epic.

Two years after a somewhat controversial arrival into the world's fleet of ocean liners, the Norwegian Epic still dances the waters of the Caribbean and Europe to the same tune: Entertainment is king. At the same time, it's clear that food is also part of the ship's royalty.

So if you're searching for a reason why the Epic is as popular as it is - sailing weekly trips to St. Maarten, St. Thomas and Nassau at 85-to 100-per-cent capacity, according to some Norwegian sources - look no further. The combination of simultaneous, multiple venues featuring topflight entertainers and specialty restaurants that are affordable and superb seem to be the foundation for success.

Norwegian Breakaway Brings The Taste Of New York To Sea

Norwegian Cruise Line announces its newest ship, Norwegian Breakaway, will offer Sabrett hot dogs and Brooklyn Lager beer onboard when she begins sailing year-round from New York in May 2014

Norwegian Cruise Line announced today two more New York-inspired food and beverage offerings onboard Norwegian Breakaway, the line’s newest ship: Sabrett Hot Dogs and Brooklyn Lager beer. Further enhancing the ship’s ties to New York City, its year-round homeport, these newly-announced offerings provide guests with a taste of the Big Apple at sea.
Located on the Waterfront, pool deck and forward deck, three Sabrett hot dog carts will sport the brand’s iconic yellow and blue umbrellas and offer up the same all-beef frankfurters that New Yorkers have voted the #1 hot dog for more than 50 years, renowned for the famous snap! of their natural casing. The carts on Norwegian Breakaway will also include the company’s famous condiments, including mustard, sauerkraut, relish, and onions in a delicious tomato sauce, so guests can order their complimentary Sabrett hot dog “all the way” (complete with all the toppings).

“As a New Yorker, I’ve been a fan of Sabrett’s. Since we are launching New York’s ship, it made complete sense to bring New York’s favorite hot dog to Norwegian Breakaway,” said Kevin Sheehan, CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line. “With Sabrett hot dogs and Brooklyn Lager beer, our guests will truly get a real taste of the city as a part of their whole New York experience while onboard.”

“Sabrett is a New York institution, offering our famous all-beef frankfurters to New Yorkers for half a century,” said Mark Rosen, vice president of Sabrett. “We’re so excited to offer our hot dogs on board Norwegian Breakaway and look forward to welcoming New York’s ship to the Sabrett family.”

New York’s award-winning Brooklyn Brewery’s Brooklyn Lager beer will also be offered on Norwegian Breakaway in Uptown Bar & Grill. Lager beer in the “Vienna” style, Brooklyn Lager’s amber-gold color and firm malt center are supported by a refreshing bitterness and floral hop aroma. The aromatic qualities of the beer are enhanced by “dry-hopping”, the centuries-old practice of steeping the beer with fresh hops as it undergoes a long, cold maturation. The result is a wonderfully flavorful beer, smooth, refreshing and very versatile with food.
