Carnival Europe donates 200,000 euro to support the European migrant crisis

Carnival Europe (Costa Cruises and AIDA Cruises combined) recently made a healthy donation to the tune of 200,000 euro for projects in Germany and Italy to provide much needed support for migrants fleeing to safe European countries from war zones or the threat of prosecution.

The CEO of the Costa Group Michael Thamm was reported to have said 'The fate of the refugees concerns all of us,' he went on 'Hundreds of thousands of people who have left everything behind them need all the support we can give them. For us it is a question of humanity to provide help now, fast, and without red tape.'

In particular one of the main benefactors of this aid will be Medecins Sans Frontieres MSF an organization that has assisted refugees and migrants both on arrival and with first aid as well as the Reception Center in Pozzallo, all in close collaboration with Italy's Ministry of Health. In eseence, MSF delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, healthcare exclusion and natural or man-made disasters.

MSF operates 6 medical facilities in the north of Syria and directly supports more than 100 health posts and field hospitals throughout the country, with a particular focus on the besieged areas. These are mostly makeshift facilities with no MSF staff present, where MSF provides both material support and distance training support to help the Syrian medics cope with the extreme medical needs. This support network has been built up over the past 4 years.

The organization also provides psychological and medical support in the ports and in the reception centers of Ragusa province. In May MSF activated sea rescue operations in the Mediterranean with three dedicated ships.

Details of the Biggest Costa Ship Revealed

Costa Cruises has invested approximately €550 million in what will be the largest cruise ship flying the Italian flag, Costa Diadema.

The ship will become the flagship of the Costa fleet with a total passenger capacity of 4,947, 1,253 crew embers and 1,854 cabins.
The project involves approximately 1,000 shipyard workers and another 2,500 from linked industries.
The employment benefits also about 400 outside companies, the majority of which are Italian.

Costa Diadema will be bigger, more spacious and more modern in terms of the services offered.

The layout of public areas have been redesigned in a way to incorporate large environments over multiple levels facing the sea, that recreate the atmosphere of a lively beach side resort, connected by pathways that allow guests to move freely from one area to the other.

Costa Diadema is designed to offer a variety of experiences and activities for its guests, from new and enticing gastronomic and tasting opportunities, in places like the Vinoteca and the Proseccheria, the Bavarian-style Birreria, the Japanese Teppanyaki, the Piazza Pizza pizzeria and the Gelateria, to fun-filled innovations such as the Country Rock Club or the Lazer Maze, a multifunctional room with interactive games.

Shopaholics will enjoy the Portobello Market Square in a spacious area filled with shops.
The new ship also contains a three-level Samsara Spa with an exclusive outdoor area where guests can enjoy their holiday in an atmosphere of total wellness and relaxation.

Gianni Onorato Leaves Costa Cruises after 27 years

Gianni Onorato was instrumental in the growth of Costa and will be sorely missed by the Italian Cruise Line that are currently experiencing a period of significant change.

Gianni Onorato, President of Costa Crociere S.p.A., has recently announced he is leaving the Company fore a new career direction.

Michael Thamm will be taking over Gianni Onorato’s functions.

Gianni Onorato joined Costa Cruises back in 1986 as an employee of the hotel activity sector before becoming Cruise Product Director. Later appointed to the position of Vice President Cruise Operations, he has held the position of President since 2004.

The Chief Executive Officer of Costa Crociere S.p.A., Michael Thamm, commented: "I regret Gianni’s decision. He has played an important role in the development and growth of Costa Crociere."

In an official statement, Gianni Onorato said "I have spent 27 years full of great challenges that I have enjoyed with passion and dedication. Over the years I feel like I have given a lot but also received a great deal both on a personal and a professional level. My deepest thanks to shareholders, Pier Luigi Foschi, Michael Thamm, my closest staff and all Costa employees for being such unforgettable companions on this journey."

Rumors around the Shipping community suggest that Mr Onorato will be moving to MSC, however these claims have not been substantiated.

Can Carnival grow its way out of trouble?

The world's largest cruise group Carnival Corp. is expected to place an order for up to 2 new vessels this summer, which will be due for delivery in 2017.

The likely candidates to receive new tonnage are Princess Cruises and/or Costa Cruises. The forecasted capacity in both cases has been reported to be in the range of 3,600 passengers.

In the case of Princess Cruises, the band is performing well and recently launched its new ship the "Regal Princess", with a capacity of 3,560-passengers.

The Italian outfit Costa Cruises on the other hand is struggling somewhat since the sinking of the Concordia, whereby logically sales have been a challenge. However the 3,724-passenger ship the "Costa Diadema" is set to debut in November 2014 and after a huge restructure under Michael Tamm, better days are envisaged.

Apart from this news other Carnival brands also have new ships on order coming into service in 2016 such as:
  • Carnival Cruise Lines
  • Holland America Line
  • Seabourn
The realistic window of opportunity for placing a new order with a serious shipyard for a 2017 delivery is August 2014, so no doubt we will learn something soon.

One scenario suggested by the Carnival Marketing Department is that Carnival Corp. will potentially order a ship design that could be used across several potential brands, without specifying a specific brand until a later date. Such a situation could save on costs and allow for more time to see how the individual brands are performing.

Meanwhile, competing Cruise Lines with new ships on the books for 2017 include:
  • Royal Caribbean
  • Norwegian Cruise Line
  • MSC Cruises
Either way it does seem like the new CEO Donald understands that new buildings could be the catalyst for growth in the share price, assuming of course he picks the right brand that can fill the ship.

Is it the beginning of the end for the Carnival Group or can the new CEO Donald turn it around?

The Cruise Ship industry is a small world and anyone within it acutely understands that the past 2 years or so have been a Roller Coaster ride for the world's largest group Carnival Corp.

Disaster first struck with Costa Crociere, when the Costa Concordia sank off the coast of Italy back in 2012, which caused over 30 passenger fatalities. Then it was the engine-room fire on board the Carnival Triumph (pictured above), which deprived the ship of its power. In this scenario for 5 grueling days, passengers lacked life's bare essentials such as air conditioning, hot food and the use of most toilets on board. Naturally, the mass media had a field day and went to town on Carnival.

Subsequently, the demand for cruises within the group as a whole plummeted in 2013. Carnival responded by slashing prices to fill all of its 102 ships and thereafter announced a $700+ million project to install emergency generators, along with improving its fire suppression systems.

Then in June 2013, the major figurehead of the group Micky Arison (son the founder and CEO since 1979), moved aside. In came an emergency substitute for a wounded Corporation, with the charismatic charm of Anold W. Donald, who spent no less than 12 years on the company’s board.

For Donald, it's simple, the “great camaraderie” passengers find on board his ships matters more than all the fancy restaurants or countless amenities. However, that quintessential yet intangible feeling is not so easily promoted to the public at large, especially under these crisis circumstances.

In many ways Donald was a strange choice, as he made his career at the hotly contested company of Monsanto Co. managing of all things Roundup weed killer. He later led a company manufacturing the artificial sweetener Equal.

Donald was first drawn to Cruises in 1982 by the thrill of the Casino, especially so as he openly admits to be a Blackjack card counter. He claims that business is business and he now pitches his Cruises as a hassle-free, affordable vacation. Donald even went on record to say “We are actually, for a lot of people, more cost effective than visiting the relatives and we’re probably more fun”

Donald wishes his Cruise Guests to spend at least $20 USD more per day, divided between the Cruise ticket and On Board Revenue. This equates to an extra Cocktail and a fine dining meal or an additional shore excursion. This extra $20 USD per day would secure Carnival an additional $1.5 USD billion per annum.

Sure enough Carnival need the money, because the Corporation generated $1.08 billion in the last fiscal year of 2013 which is actually the lowest annual profit since way back in 2002. However, 2014 figures are looking better and the share price has regained strength closing the year around 2,857, which is close to the 3000+ high of the last 5 years.

Donald responded by shuffling his executives around, with the aim of harnessing the company’s 10 brands (Carnival Cruises, Princess Cruises, Costa Cruises, AIDA Cruises, Holland America Line, P & O Cruises UK and Australia, Cunard Line, Iberocruceros and Seabourn) to better synergize, especially where cost control is concerned. The formula is not so easy find however, as each Cruise Line has its own unique history, demographics of Guests and personality. As a result Costa is becoming more like AIDA every day, Iberocruceros seems to be ready to close and a general dilution of the brands may in reality be on the cards.

Donald admits however that “The brands are king,” and “People don’t sail on a corporation.” Nevertheless, the target is for Carnival to capitalize on its massive size by negotiating cross Cruise Line procurement deals with one set of vendors for key cost areas such as food, cleaning supplies, Port Agent services, Shore Excursion activities and mot service providers in general. Donald claims that when he took over, the leaders of the 10 brand never even met together!

The risk however, is by sourcing food, Shore Excursions and certain aspects of the operation from one unique supplier, the differentiation of each individual brand may be affected along the way, as each Cruise Line previously arranged its own supplies and provisions tailored to its own unique brand style and needs.

Cruise suppliers, concessionaires and service providers across the world are noticing the great Carnival squeeze, whereby there are winners and losers. Perhaps with more lateral thinking, the best way forward for Carnival in the future, is to shift the context from defensive austerity style cost control, towards truly proactive growth, which is how the success of the brands were created in the first place!

The challenges of Cruising in Brazil, now outweigh the benefits!

Brazil is a magnificent country in Tourism terms with a wide diversity of attractions from the sun-drenched Samba and Tanga beaches of Copacabana, where Haviana’s are the desired footwear, to the earth’s greatest Rainforest in the Amazon. Brazil is the size of a continent and the “B” of the BRICS countries that are supposed to dominate our planet by 2020.

Cruising once boomed in the seaside city of Santos, which is the country’s main embarkation port, as Cruise Lines clamored to get a hold of those strong REALS held by Brazilians that were not shy to spend! However, recently, it’s all gone a little pear-shaped. In particular Costa Crociere have scaled back from 5 ships to 2, market leaders MSC do not show the same signs of growth as before and most American / European Cruise Lines are purposely avoiding Brazil.

So what’s the problem? In essence there are 3 fundamental issues as follows:

1. Cabotage
The forced employment of Brazilian nationals among the compliment of Crew kicks-in after the 31st day a ship frequents Brazilian waters (Cruise or Cargo). The actual percentage varies, for Cruise ships it starts at 25% and goes all the way up to a staggering 75%! The Recruitment and training of Brazilian nationals, who are not all ideally suited to the culture and work ethics of life on board is challenging to say the least for most Cruise Lines, which is a major deterrent to deploying Cruise ships in Brazilian waters for any length of time. This reality is actually to the detriment of the Brazilian economy, considering the potential being lost.

2. Taxation
It seems that the Brazilian authorities are coming up with all manner of invented taxes and as far as Cabotage is concerned from a taxation perspective, it’s a grey area of concern.
Moreover, Cruise ships calling to more than 1 Brazilian port are now forced to pay tax on consumables (mainly food and beverage, but it also includes services like Photo, Beauty/Spa etc). There’s other less obvious and hidden taxes as well and the stance or situation changes too often for Cruise Lines to plan with confidence.

3. Trust
Cruise itineraries are planned around 2 years in advance in order to meet marketing and brochure deadlines. With all the above concerns along with the uncertainty of potential future changes, it’s a major risk for Cruise Lines to consider, hence those already active are drawing back and others avoid Brazil altogether.

The above is such a crying shame for a world-class Tourism destination like Brazil, which could become the new Miami/Florida! Let’s only hope that the Government of Brazil will come to its senses and stabilize the situation by facilitating Cruise Lines better, generating improved dialogue and giving the assurance of a stable shipping environment for Cruise Lines to plan ahead for the mutual benefit of Brazil and all that desire to frequent her waters.

High Winds Bashed Cruise Ship Costa neoRomantica

A number of newspapers in Europe are reporting that the Costa neoRomantica sustained damage which it encountered high winds and rough weather last Wednesday night.

An Italian newspaper reported that the Costa cruise ship was hit by high waves (seven meters) raised by gusts of wind that exceeded 125 kilometers per hour. The neoRomantica was sailing from Trapani to Marseille when it was struck by violent gusts of wind.

The cruise ship had to drop one of its giant anchors and skip the port of Marseille. The neoRomantica had to dock in Savona. Costa has use buses to transport passengers from Savona to Marseilles.

The Italian Crociere in Diretto blog and Facebook page contains accounts of the storm and photographs of the damage to the ship. Many cabins were flooded with water and there was a loss of power and black-out during the storm. Passengers were frightened and some had to stay in the hallways.

Finally Costa will be able to put the Concordia effect behind them, as the vessel limps into the scrap yard and the company sustains its 65 years of history

With 65+ years of successful operations and a single major tragedy, Costa can now finally move forward and bring closure to the Concordia effect, which has dominated the cruise and mass media in recent times.

At last the unpleasant sight of pleasure boats for profit touring the area of the Concordia wreckage will stop in Giglio. The Costa Concordia will soon finally reach its spiritual home and resting place in Genoa, but will meet an ungracious end by being sold for scrap. Although many parts will be recycled even for future Cruise Ships and the copper reused among other parts.

Just a couple of weeks ago Technicians were spraying bottles of Prosecco over each other in seemingly inappropriate scenes, with respect to the successful salvage in Giglio. Some 14 vessels shadowed the Concordia in a huge naval armada that sounded sirens, as a red tug boat sprayed 2 enormous jets of water over the mega ship.

When all is said and done in the grand scheme of things, the Concordia saga cannot be viewed as an event to celebrate in any way and it's too soon for the families of those that passed away and the survivors to face underwater scenes of the wreckage on mass TV, how insensitive the media is!

‎‎It's time for deep healing without constant Media reminders for the affected families of passengers and Crew and for the employees of Costa to move on with the next generation of operations.

At Off Radar we wish all affected families and loved ones the space to heal and the Corporate staff of Costa along with the entire compliment of Crew fleet-wide the chance to bring closure to this accident, as it's time to learn and move on‎.

We close by saying that the Concordia experience should be a lesson that the whole Industry can learn from. May no Cruise Line be so arrogant to think it could never happen to them. ‎May we all learn and pro-actively avoid anything like this ever occurring again in the Industry.

More ships on order for the Carnival Group

It now appears that Carnival Corp. are set to order 1-2 new ships this summer for a delivery in 2017.
The brands expected to benefit from this news with new vessels are Princess Cruises and/or Costa Cruises respectively.

Both vessels are likely to be in the 3,600 passengers range. Interestingly Princess Cruises recently launched its new 3,560-passenger ship called the Regal Princess in Europe, and Costa launched a 3,724 passenger capacity so called the Costa Diadema (launch in November) .

In order to meet a realistic time frame for confirming an order with a shipyard, which offers sufficient time for a 2017 delivery,  Carnival would need to place the order by the end of August 2014.

Carnival Corp. are studying the possibility to order a ship design that could be utilized across several brands within the group. This is a fascinating concept,  however it may conflict with the current brand diversification focus. In the end only time will tell to what actually transpires and all eyes will be on Carnival in August.

The Costa Concordia shipwreck removal has been postponed until the middle of July

Once again it seems like the Costa Concrdia will not budge. This time round a construction accident and tardy project plan approval have delayed the June deadline for removing the remains of the vessel to July 18.

Technically speaking there are challenges with the chains holding 800 ton sponsons (metal flotation tanks) that will refloat Concordia, to enable it to be towed. Repairs are necessary before the vessel can be moved. We now understand that one of the damaged sponsons has been transported from the Concordia wreck to Genoa on the Italian mainland, where it is undergoing repairs. The other is being repaired on site.

There were actually 11 sponsons positioned on Concordia's port side prior to the ship's 'parbuckling' in September, when the 114,000 ton vessel was rolled into an upright position and lowered onto an underwater platform. Now another 19 sponsons are needed to refloat the ship.

Titan Micoperi, the salvage operator performing the Concordia removal, has successfully installed four sponsons and is scheduled to install a fifth today soon, according to Concordia Wreck Removal.

In addition to the sponsons, planning progress came to a halt in late April when the Monitoring Observatory requested that further risk assessments.

The new deadline for the refloating completion is July 18th, however it’s known by all that sponson related installation operations are always complex and also weather sensitive; this is why the schedule is updated on a weekly basis. The eventual destination and ultimate resting place for the Concordia’s scrap operation still requires confirmation.

Ships in Sochi for the winter Olympics to help meet the accommodation demands

Warm Greetings from a wet and windy Piraeus on board the Louis owned Thomson Spirit, which like the Louis Olympia (fittingly named) are bound for Sochi.

The concept of Cruise Ships providing emergency accommodation for major events is actually nothing new. The most notable example was back in 2001 when the former Festival Cruises hosted the G8 summit in Genoa. Despite rioting in the streets all delegates were safely contained within the Port.

NCL, Costa and others all have a presence in Sochi and no doubt this 3 week charter period is earning some crucial winter euros. The nearest port with adequate docking is around 40km from the Olympic setting, hence the operation on board is expected to be light during the day with

Qatar will host the world cup in 2022 and accommodation capacity may well be a factor there. As such the authorities are wisely investing in a state of the art Cruise Ship Terminal to support the extra capacity needed. Off Radar Cruise News will track the progress of the development.

The ever growing size of Cruise Ships today are widely considered to be floating Hotels or Resorts and as such their mobility will no doubt play an important role in hosting major events around the world in the future.

Meanwhile, we wish Costa, Louis and NCL every success in Sochi.

UPDATE
Both Louis Cruises vessels are now en-route to Sochi.

Is Carnival setting a trend for high level refits as opposed to investing in New-buildings?

Carnival Cruises has been in the news for all the wrong reasons this year, however one must give credit to the Mega Cruise Line for spending $155 million USD on the Carnival Destiny (now 17 years old). By all recent reports, this upgrade transformed the ship so much, that it is now in many respects completely different, hence the name change to the "Carnival Sunshine".

The interesting precedent which has occurred here, is that similar high investment upgrades could spark a new trend in cruising, whereby Cruise Lines could opt to upgrade and transform rather than purchase a new-building. By way of financial illustration here are the facts:
  • A new mega ship costs in the region of $550 to $750+ million USD.
  • The Carnival Sunshine refit therefore represents a huge overall saving.
  • The same strategy could well be adopted by other Cruise Lines.
  • Carnival's largest European brand Costa recently converted the the Costa Romantica to the Neo Romantica in a 90 million euro upgrade.
  • The Mistral from Ibero Cruises will now enter the Costa fleet and become the Costa Riviera in a similar upgrading move.
The new Carnival Sunshine's extreme makeover also included most of Carnival's own Fun Ship 2.0 features, which are the the same or similar to that of the Carnival Breeze (newest Carnival ship).

The most fascinating aspect of the transformation was the increased capacity from a 2,600 pax ship to a 3,000 pax, thereby increasing the scalable long term profitability.

Cruise Media attention is now focussed on Carnival to see if this is a one off or whether indeed the strategy is going to follow through to all the older vessels in the fleet and indeed to other group members as a whole.

The Russian Government to Charter a Mega Ship from Costa for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi

The Government of Russia are planning to Charter a Cruise Ship to support the accommodation needs for the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi. We understand that the successful company will be Costa Crociere from Italy.

In essence the state-owned Rosmorport will finance the Charter and it has already signed a deal one of the Mega Ships in the Costa Crociere fleet for the provision of accommodation specifically for visitors coming to the Winter Olympics, where the host city will be Sochi located in the north eastern part of the black sea. Costa Crociere successfully won the bid in an open tender process.

The much awaited "Sochi Winter Games" will be held from 7th to 23rd February 2014. This will be the second major recent sporting event Russia is hosting, following the recent 9-day Athletic World Championships that just passed, which was the biggest international sports event that post-Soviet Russia has hosted. The Athletic World Championships involved nearly 2,000 track and field athletes and was monitored by many as an unofficial indicator of how well Russia will perform at the Winter Olympics in Sochi.

By all accounts there were challenges at the Athletic World Championships such as:
  • Bus drivers that transported the athletes and fans which got lost.
  • Spectators who muddled their way to the stadium on a raw path through the trees.
  • Controversy over the new anti-gay law implemented by Russia (bad timing).
At least it's good news for Costa that deserve a break and some positive news.

The Captain of Costa Concordia Speaks out in Court

He is named as some to be one of the most hated people in Italy, but Francesco Schettino has the legal right to be heard in court.

The ill fated Captain is facing serious charges of causing the death of 32 people, in addition to a shipwreck and abandoning the ship before its 4,200 passengers and crew.

When the Italian Captain appeared in the Grosseto court recently, although he apologized to the victims, he also assertively mentioned that he is not the only one responsible for the tragic event which caused the death of 32 people in January 2012. Now, the Italian Court has to decide whether he is guilty or not.

The Captain admitted  that he made mistakes, but also went onto blame the Indonesian Helmsman for not following his orders correctly.  More specifically, he mentioned that Jacob Rusli Bin steered the ship in the wrong direction and caused a fatal delay by changing the ship’s course.

According to the Associated Press, the Captain caturing huge media attention and his legal team hopes that the Italian Court will agree to a further investigation and examination of the destroyed ship after which time it can be determined whether any technical problems contributed to the disaster.

Reports following the wreck indicate its feasible that some safety mechanism on board failed to function, making the whole situation more difficult to be evaluated and handled.

The case continues...

Costa Concordia Survivors' Friends Facebook Page

Facebook has for some time been home to the Costa Concordia Survivors' Friends Page that was put together as an open group for anyone to participate in telling their story, giving sympathy or to express their feelings towards family or friends who fell victim to this tragedy.

It is a warm sentiment and positive gesture in enabling people to share grief and express their thoughts. Though it is naturally sad, there seems to be something very comforting in sharing thoughts and experiences with kind words.

Today, there are currently, 2450 members (as of 9 October 2013) and the numbers are still growing. Some of the sentiments are loving touches of what people would like to do; for example, Rossano Bonacchi, would like to arrange for a street to be dedicated for his friend, Guiseppe. Those who would like to sign the petition to help make this possible, go to: www.petizionepubblica.it

As of May 27, 2012, Kevin RobelloRussel is still waiting to hear news of his brother, the only person unaccounted for. People in the group are giving Kevin confidence to keep strong and that news will come.

There are many sections to this group such as photos, videos, news and information that is shared among those who are keeping in touch with all developing news stories. People from all over the world are signing up; you will find languages spoken such as; Italian, Spanish, English and more who are giving the group support. Facebook does have translation ability, though it is not perfect, at least you can get the jest of what is being written and explained.

Latest article on the Costa Concordia: The raising of the Costa Concordia

Costa Concordia Salvage

Two years after the Costa Concordia flipped over the coast of Tuscany, engineers would attempt today to salvage the disastrous cruise ship, which lays half-sunk and crushed over the reef. The accident caused the death of 32 people out of  the 4.200 passengers on board while many others suffered severe injuries.

Now the goal is to pull out the ship without causing any damage to the environmentally protected waters of Giglio Island.

What is considered to be the challenge and the difficult part of the engineers is towing it away in one piece, as a 115.000 ton vessel in its spot may damage the area. This historic process is going to be divided in two steps: parbucking and re-floating. The steps are said to be really difficult and risky, as the attempt has never been tested out in such a large vessel.

According to the Italian Government, this process is expected to take from at least 8 hours to 2 days! However, the process, scheduled to start earlier today, has been delayed due to weather difficulties.

The raising of the Costa Concordia

Once again the Costa Concordia is making headlines as salvage operations commence at the wreck site off the coast of the island of Giglio, Italy. The ship is actually being raised by adopting a new technique, known as parbuckling, which has never happened before considering a ship of this size.

According to the project's own website, the technique involves:
  • Stabilizing the ship
  • Preparing a false bottom under the ship
  • Fixing watertight boxes or caissons to the side of the ship that is above water.
  • After this, undersea platforms will be built where the ship will rest after rotation.
The rotating or “parbuckling” aspect of the technique may take days as its a complex and delicate undertaking. We understand that cranes will be used to pull the ship upright (helped by the caissons). Moreover, when the ship is finally upright, more caissons will be fitted, this time to the other side to stabilize the wreck further.

To complete the procedure, a pneumatic type system then will push the ship upwards, at which time the caissons will be emptied of water and whats left of the ship will re-floated and towed to port.

The project's website also states that operation to remove the Costa Concordia was as much as 73% complete at the beginning of August 2013. It wil be some feat if they actually manage it!

5 Crew Members of Costa Concordia Sentenced

Last Saturday, 4 crew members and a company official of Costa Concordia were sentenced to jail as a result of their responsibility for the cruise ship tragic incident back in 2012.

Now, the only thing pending to officially close the case is Captain Francesco Schettino's trial, facing charges of ship abandonment.

The 5 crew members received short punishments for multiple manslaughter, negligence and shipwreck as they were sentenced for a period up to 34 months.

Of course, in legal terms, this means that none of the 5 are likely to be jailed as the sentences got suspended and some may be appealed or replaced with community service.

Hearings are scheduled to resume in September.
