Can Carnival grow its way out of trouble?

The world's largest cruise group Carnival Corp. is expected to place an order for up to 2 new vessels this summer, which will be due for delivery in 2017.

The likely candidates to receive new tonnage are Princess Cruises and/or Costa Cruises. The forecasted capacity in both cases has been reported to be in the range of 3,600 passengers.

In the case of Princess Cruises, the band is performing well and recently launched its new ship the "Regal Princess", with a capacity of 3,560-passengers.

The Italian outfit Costa Cruises on the other hand is struggling somewhat since the sinking of the Concordia, whereby logically sales have been a challenge. However the 3,724-passenger ship the "Costa Diadema" is set to debut in November 2014 and after a huge restructure under Michael Tamm, better days are envisaged.

Apart from this news other Carnival brands also have new ships on order coming into service in 2016 such as:
  • Carnival Cruise Lines
  • Holland America Line
  • Seabourn
The realistic window of opportunity for placing a new order with a serious shipyard for a 2017 delivery is August 2014, so no doubt we will learn something soon.

One scenario suggested by the Carnival Marketing Department is that Carnival Corp. will potentially order a ship design that could be used across several potential brands, without specifying a specific brand until a later date. Such a situation could save on costs and allow for more time to see how the individual brands are performing.

Meanwhile, competing Cruise Lines with new ships on the books for 2017 include:
  • Royal Caribbean
  • Norwegian Cruise Line
  • MSC Cruises
Either way it does seem like the new CEO Donald understands that new buildings could be the catalyst for growth in the share price, assuming of course he picks the right brand that can fill the ship.

Australia is fast becoming one of the world’s largest Cruise ship hubs

Cruising is literally booming in the Asia Pacific region at present!

For a start China is expected to be the world’s second source market by 2017, which is a remarkable development. However, much of the tangible development is occurring in Australia, which is fast becoming a major Cruise hub. Such growth in Australia is being further supported by the announcement that one of the largest Princess Cruises vessels the “Emerald Princess” will deployed to the region using Sydney as its Home Port in late 2016 for its first season.

The 3082 Lower Berth capacity Emerald Princess will join a rapidly growing fleet of 5 existing Princess ships in Australia and when the time comes, Australia will become home to the largest Princess Cruises fleet outside of the US, with a record capacity of 11,800 berths across all 5 vessels.

New Zealand and Papua New Guini are 2 more neighbour destinations growing rapidly on the back of this success story within Asia Pacific. Port Agent Cruise Market leaders within this region “Inchcape” otherwise known as ISS enjoyed -------- calls in Australia, New Zealand and Papau New Guini combined in 2014 and the outlook is set to rise further.

In many respects Asia Pacific was a saving grace for the Cruise Industry as growth in cruising started to slow in the more traditional Cruise markets of North America and Europe, partly caused by a mixture of weak growth, austerity and a general reduction of spending power.

Princess Cruises presents: Stephen Schwartz' "Magic to do"

Princess Cruises announced a first-of-its-kind cruise industry partnership with three-time Oscar winner and composer of “Wicked, Pippin and Godspell” Stephen Schwartz. The cruise line's new relationship with such a major creative talent from Broadway and Hollywood includes a multi-year agreement to oversee the creative development of four new musicals to debut across the fleet over the next several years.

Schwartz has won four Grammys, three Academy Awards for "Best Song" and "Best Score" for Pocahontas and "Best Song" for The Prince of Egypt and has been nominated for six Tony Awards. He is the only songwriter in Broadway history to ever have three shows run more than 1,900 performances.

His first musical for Princess Cruises will celebrate Schwartz's lifelong fascination with magic. Called “Magic to Do”, the show will combine thrilling magic with some of Schwartz's most famous songs and a brand new song written exclusively for Princess. The show will debut aboard Crown Princess in the fall.

"I'm excited about the possibility of using the enormous resources available with Princess to create new and innovative theatrical entertainment," said Schwartz. "Their onboard theatres are Broadway-caliber venues with state-of-the-art technical capability, and coupled with their access to first-rate performers, I see it as an extraordinary and almost irresistible opportunity. I have already received overwhelming and enthusiastic interest from talented colleagues – writers, directors, and designers to whom I have spoken – and I hope together we will create new kinds of cruise ship shows to entertain and inspire Princess guests unlike any other productions at sea."

Schwartz will oversee the creative development for all four shows, bringing together a cadre of Broadway talent to support the productions through direction and design. In addition, Jim Steinmeyer, the mastermind behind many of the great magic illusions over the last 25 years, will create the magic experience in Magic to Do. Steinmeyer has worked with some of the greatest magicians of all time including Doug Henning, Siegfried & Roy and David Copperfield.

Auditions for Magic to Do begin next week in New York and Toronto, followed by Los Angeles and Vancouver. Schwartz will participate in the audition process, helping source top talent and performers for the 45-minute show.

The Panama 2014 Canal Cruise season officially begins in earnest

Holland America vessel transiting through the Panama Canal

It's that special time of the year again, whereby the Panama Canal Cruise ship season commences, this time round with the transit of the Coral Princess, which is sailing on a repositioning voyage from Los Angeles to Ft. Lauderdale.

As from October 2014 until April 2015, some 200+ Cruise Ships are expected to transit through the Panama Canal during this Cruise season.

The main Cruise Lines involved are:
  • Holland America Line
  • Princess Cruises
  • Celebrity Cruise Line
  • Norwegian Cruise Line
  • Costa Cruises
  • Hapag-Lloyd
Most of the above Cruise Lines will be operating repositioning Cruises from 7 days to 10 days.

The lure of the Panama Canal is still very much alive and it's something that all avid true cruisers want to experience at some point in their lives!

More ships on order for the Carnival Group

It now appears that Carnival Corp. are set to order 1-2 new ships this summer for a delivery in 2017.
The brands expected to benefit from this news with new vessels are Princess Cruises and/or Costa Cruises respectively.

Both vessels are likely to be in the 3,600 passengers range. Interestingly Princess Cruises recently launched its new 3,560-passenger ship called the Regal Princess in Europe, and Costa launched a 3,724 passenger capacity so called the Costa Diadema (launch in November) .

In order to meet a realistic time frame for confirming an order with a shipyard, which offers sufficient time for a 2017 delivery,  Carnival would need to place the order by the end of August 2014.

Carnival Corp. are studying the possibility to order a ship design that could be utilized across several brands within the group. This is a fascinating concept,  however it may conflict with the current brand diversification focus. In the end only time will tell to what actually transpires and all eyes will be on Carnival in August.

Agony for the Ex-Pacific Princess as she fights to survive in Turkey

The Ex Pacific Princess is facing a tragic struggle to survive at a scrapyard in Aliaga, Turkey. What's more it's still not over!

Having already been corrected back in August from a heavy list, which she took on while under tow from Genoa, the Ex Pacific Princess has been relocated to a new location, however she has yet again started taking on water and listing on the starboard.

So far the Ex Pacific Princess which is literally on her last legs has yet to fall victim to the fateful cutters.

The former Pacific Princess that was the stage for the “Love Boat” TV series, (currently named ACIF), is managing to hang on. What a shame no-one came forward to convert her into a museum!

Alas the end is nigh for the original 1970's Love Boat (Pacific Princess)

The MS Pacific Princess Cruise Ship otherwise known as the "Love Boat", which enjoyed iconic status as a result of the popular U.S. 1970's TV show (of the same name) finally sailed its last voyage to experience a sad ending in a ship-breaking yard on Turkey's Aegean sea coast.

The Pacific Princess (stats: 13,500 tons, 171-m-long) will now unromantically be stripped for its metal and spare parts. The cruise ship departed from Genoa, Italy and arrived to the seaside town of Aliaga in Turkey this week after a challenging trip in a violent storm, which will be its last adventure.

Gavin MacLeod, the Love Boat's Captain performed on the U.S. TV network ABC from 1977 - 1986. The ship was reported to earn Princess Cruises literally millions at the time and by all accounts the show was the catalyst to propel Cruising from the elite sector to appeal to the masses. The "Fun" Ships of Carnival Cruises also capitalized from this wave of enthusiasm for Cruising.

The ship experienced multiple modifications over its lifespan. It was decommissioned for 5 years, and renovation at this juncture would have been simply too costly according to technocrats. So sad that Carnival Group could not step in and save this famous ship from the ultimate shameful ending of being scrapped.

Princess Cruises Joins USA Vietnam War Commemoration as Partner

Cruise Line Pledges Efforts to Honor and Highlight Service of Armed Forces

Major General James T. Jackson (U.S. Army, retired), left, presented a certificate from the Secretary of Defense to Princess Cruises President and CEO Alan Buckelew.

Santa Clarita, Calif. (PRWEB) May 17, 2013

In a special ceremony coinciding with Armed Forces Day tomorrow, Princess Cruises was officially recognized as a commemorative partner of the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration. Major General James T. Jackson (U.S. Army, retired) presented a commemorative flag and certificate from the Secretary of Defense to Princess Cruises President and CEO Alan Buckelew, a Vietnam veteran himself, to mark the occasion.

The cruise line is being recognized as a commemorative partner in this program, created by the Department of Defense, in part because of activities saluting veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces during Princess’ first-ever fundraising cruise. The sailing is expected to generate $1 million for two organizations committed to U.S. veterans – Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund Inc. and Operation Homefront Inc. The four-day cruise sails from Houston November 5.

More than 100 Princess employees were in attendance at the special celebration, including many Vietnam veterans, veterans from other conflicts, and military family members. Local student cadets from Valencia High School’s Jr. Air Force ROTC opened the program with the presentation of the colors.

“This is an important partnership for us at Princess, and as a veteran, it’s also a cause near and dear to my heart,” said Alan Buckelew, Princess president and CEO. “Like many Vietnam veterans, I don’t talk about my experience much, so I understand the importance of recognizing those who served as we mark the war’s 50th anniversary.”

The United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration is a national program conducted under the leadership of the Department of Defense to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. The national program will include activities to thank and honor veterans of the Vietnam War-including those held as prisoners of war or listed as missing in action¬-for their service and sacrifice on behalf of the U.S. and to thank and honor the families of these veterans. As a commemorative partner, Princess Cruises will conduct activities to recognize Vietnam Veterans for their service, valor and sacrifice. To learn more about the national commemorative program, visit http://www.vietnamwar50th.com.

Princess’ first-ever cruise to support U.S. veterans will feature a number of special guests including former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Michael Mullen (Ret.); retired senior officers from the Army, Navy, Coast Guard and Air Force; an award-winning war correspondent; and other respected speakers, authors and panelists. More information and the latest line-up of special guests can be found at http://www.princess.com/cruisingforacause/.

The Western Caribbean cruise will sail November 5-9, 2013 round trip from Houston aboard Caribbean Princess, with a call at Progreso, Mexico. The four-day cruise will offer passengers the opportunity to honor those who have served in the military as well as active duty military personnel. In addition to the line-up of impressive military guests and speakers, there will be special performers, celebrities, unique topic panels and a military film festival. Princess will feature custom-design onboard activities such as a Stars and Stripes Sailaway; a military themed show; a Red, White and Blue Gala; and more – to celebrate US veterans.

Cruise fares range from $549 to $1,649 per person based on double occupancy. A portion of each passenger’s cruise fare totaling approximately $500,000 will be matched by Princess Cruises for a total of $1 million earmarked for the two veterans’ organizations to share equally. As part of Princess’ ongoing Military Cruise Benefit Program, active and retired military personnel choosing to book this cruise will receive a $50 onboard credit.

Princess Cruises Tells First Five Stories of People "Linked by the Sea"

Mr. Babychuck (left) and
Sommelier Thai Reznich (right).
Tales Include Long-Lost Friends Reunited, Romance and a Little Boy Who Touched Many Hearts

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (February 12, 2013) – Princess Cruises’ new blog, “Linked by the Sea” has chronicled its first five touching stories of people who made new connections on a cruise. Told by both passengers and crew members, the tales include meeting a perfect match, friends finding each other after more than 50 years apart, and a little boy named Dominic who cheered an entire ship’s crew with his enthusiasm.

Each week the blog, found at LinkedByTheSea.com, will illustrate how a cruise not only offers a relaxing retreat from which to explore the world, but often includes the discovery of new friends that lead to meaningful or lifelong relationships. Both passengers and crew tell about people they connect with at sea.

The first five “Linked by the Sea” stories are:

Brooklyn Pals Reconnect in the Outback – Passenger Joan Shifrin was surprised when a fellow traveler on an Australia cruisetour turned out to be a long-ago friend from her childhood in Brooklyn. The two former neighbors reconnected on their cruise after 50 years apart.

Touched by Dominic – Hotel General Manager Melania Parnisari found that one passenger, an 8-year-old boy named Dominic who suffers from ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), touched everyone who met him with his cheerfulness and joy for life.

Meeting My Perfect Match – Passenger Carla Figueroa wasn’t looking for love when she sailed on Crown Princess with a group celebrating a wedding. By the end of the cruise, however, she and Christian were inseparable, and married three years later.

“Do You Know Danny Reznich?” – Sommelier Thai Reznich was shocked to meet a passenger who had been best friends with his grandfather some 60 years ago. He became the link to reconnect the two long-lost friends who hadn’t seen each other since World War II.

Clicking Over a Kilt – Passenger Steve Deas tells how wearing a kilt onboard became an icebreaker that led to an ongoing friendship with Princess Maître d’ Generoso Mazzone. This friendship led to a unique opportunity for Steve to surprise his wife with a secret vow renewal ceremony.

Blog readers are encouraged to share their own “Linked by the Sea” stories through the blog as well. Submissions to linkedbythesea.com/share-your-story will be considered for future blog posts.

Princess Cruises Passengers Inspire New "Celebrations" Campaign

SANTA CLARITA, Calif., Jan. 18, 2013 - Princess Cruises has debuted a new look at how and why passengers cruise - as told through videos from Princess passengers themselves. Focusing on celebrations, these passenger accounts unveil many reasons for escaping completely on a cruise vacation.

Princess put video cameras in the hands of passengers who then show us what inspired their cruise. These storytellers, who were sailing in diverse worldwide destinations, including the Panama Canal, Europe, the Caribbean, Hawaii and Australia, describe different occasions that celebrate love, change and life itself.

With these videos, passengers take the viewer along as a companion on their vacation, documenting their favorite onboard experiences as well as the memorable places they visited.

"Usually people think of 'celebrations' as birthdays, anniversaries, or graduations," said Jan Swartz, Princess Cruises executive vice president. "But as we listened to these passenger stories, we recognized a great opportunity to expand the definition. From a newly adopted child to overcoming adversity such as cancer, there are many occasions in life to celebrate. And we aim to offer the best cruise experience for life's most important celebrations." The videos form the centerpiece of a new "Celebrations" campaign which launched today. Stories can be viewed at princess.com/celebrations, and Princess passengers who have recently celebrated a special occasion on board can submit their own stories at princess.com/sharestory before March 31, 2013 for a chance to win a 7-day Caribbean cruise for two aboard the new Royal Princess.

Argentinian protesters disrupted the cruise ship industry today as they demonstrated for the Falklands Islands to be handed over.

The nationalist activists targeted the Star Princess and the Seabourn Sojourn liners as they docked in Buenos Aires after stopping at the Falklands.

The UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office said today that the problems for the cruise industry have been “going on for a while” and that there have been “quite a few incidents”.

Foreign Office Minister Hugo Swire said in response to a Parliamentary question a fortnight ago: “The British government deeply regrets that elements in Argentina have recently taken action aimed at disrupting cruise ships that visit the Falklands. We condemn unequivocally any efforts to intimidate companies from pursuing their lawful business.”

New Vuna Wharf welcomes first cruise ship

Nuku'alofa,Tonga

The new Vuna Wharf welcomed its first cruise ship, the Ocean Princess, this morning with over 700 passengers coming mainly from Australia.
Passengers disembarked at the newly opened wharf and were greeted by handicraft sellers, taxi drivers and tour operators, who were excited to showcase what they had to sell and offer the tourists. Most of the tourists took the island tours around Tongatapu, bypassing the CBD, but a few strolled to town.

The presence of the cruise ship on Vuna Wharf in central Nuku'alofa was also an amazing sight, as it towered at the end of Hala Taufa'ahau.

Princess Cruises Ships Deck the Halls for a Festive Holiday Season at Sea

Princess Ships are decked from bow to stern
during the holidays.

Passengers Can Savor a Merry Onboard Atmosphere

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (November 29, 2012) – As the holiday season begins, Princess Cruises ships are getting ready to celebrate this joyful time of year around the world. Whether they are sailing through the islands of the Caribbean and South Pacific or cruising through the waters Down Under in Australia and New Zealand, ships will be decked from stem to stern, and may even experience an unusual snowfall.

“Our ships offer the perfect holiday combination – a relaxing warm-weather vacation mixed with the merriment of Christmas as well as the celebrations of Hanukkah and the chance to ring in the New Year,” said Jan Swartz, Princess Cruises executive vice president. “And don’t be surprised to see snowflakes falling in the atrium.”

Now a favorite holiday feature on Princess ships, most ships offer a daily snowfall using an innovative snow-making process that creates falling flakes that vanish on contact, letting passengers enjoy the excitement of snow flurries without the need to bundle up.

Even when the snow isn’t coming down, Princess ships will feature a merry atmosphere. Vessels are decked out in holiday décor – even including a Christmas tree on many vessels’ masts – and strolling carolers fill the air with the sounds of the season.

Passengers will keep busy with special season activities, including a “gingerbread challenge,” where teams test their holiday house-building skills in a fun-filled competition to construct the most creative gingerbread structure. Kids can test their holiday craft skills by creating a personalized ornament. Turkey-carving demonstrations will prepare passengers to do the honors at their next holiday feast.

Special events also include a reading of “The Night Before Christmas” for children by either the captain or cruise director, and a holiday variety show adds a seasonal element to the ship’s entertainment offerings. For those who can’t get enough of Christmas carols, the ships’ Princess Pop Star talent show will feature a holiday edition where competitors can croon their favorite seasonal songs.

Religious services are held as well, and passengers can attend midnight mass or an inter-denominational church service. Passengers will receive a stocking turndown gift and can enjoy classic holiday films or even relax in front of a traditional burning Yule log … on their stateroom television!

Holiday Feasts – Each Princess ship’s culinary team will delight the senses with spectacular holiday displays and will serve up several delicious feasts. A sumptuous Christmas breakfast includes complimentary eggnog. On Christmas Day, passengers will sit down to a dinner of traditional holiday fare including roast turkey and all the trimmings. Freshly prepared stollen and Christmas cookies (even some for Santa) round out the seasonal treats.

Christmas For Children – Junior cruisers can count down to the big day with special holiday activities. Santa Claus makes an appearance with a gift for each child, and a fun-filled holiday fair in the atrium offers youngsters the opportunity to try their hand at Christmas cookie decorating, balloon making, face painting, games and other competitions. The youth centers will host holiday parties for each age group, and kids can make decorations to display on the center’s Christmas tree. Youngsters can get creative with other holiday-themed arts and crafts projects throughout the cruise, and they will have an opportunity to sing Christmas carols for passengers. For parents who want to stay up later to celebrate the holidays, free late-night group kid sitting sessions will be available on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

Hanukkah – For passengers celebrating the Festival of Lights, beginning December 8 a special area of the ship is reserved for those participating in Hanukkah events. Ships display menorahs and fresh flower arrangements decorated in blue, silver and white. Children also get into the act with themed arts and crafts relating to the holiday.

Happy New Year – Passengers can ring in 2013 with fun-filled New Year's Eve parties, complete with all the festivities: music, confetti, noise-makers and a balloon drop to count down to the new year. Earlier in the evening, the dinner menu will feature special treats just for New Year’s Eve. On New Year’s Day, football fans will be pleased to know they won’t miss the holiday’s traditional college bowl games, as the telecasts will be shown (as available by satellite) on the giant Movies Under the Stars screens or in shipboard lounges.

The 16-ship Princess fleet will cover the globe this holiday season, with sailings to the Caribbean, Mexico, the Panama Canal, Australia/New Zealand, South America, Hawaii and the South Pacific.

Princess Cruises Announces First-Ever Cruise to Support U.S. Veterans

Cruising for a Cause: U.S. Veterans, Nov 5-9, 2013
Sailing is Expected to Raise $1 Million for Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund and Operation Homefront

SANTA CLARITA, Calif., Nov. 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Princess Cruises is marking Veterans Day by announcing an unprecedented cruise to support U.S. veterans, expected to raise $1 million for two highly regarded U.S. veterans organizations – the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF) and Operation Homefront. Princess President and CEO Alan Buckelew, himself a Vietnam veteran, will be on board to host the sailing.

Sailing from November 5-9, 2013 aboard Caribbean Princess from Galveston to the Western Caribbean, the four-day cruise will offer passengers the opportunity to honor both those who have served in the military as well as active duty military personnel. Onboard programming and activities – including guest lecturers, special topic panels, a Stars and Stripes Sailaway, service branch get-togethers, a film festival and more – will be custom-designed to celebrate those who have, and are, serving our country.

"We all know someone – a family member, a neighbor, a friend, perhaps ourselves – who has served," said Buckelew. "As a veteran myself, I know that America's warriors face immeasurable challenges both during active duty and when they return home. I look forward to meeting many of our passengers on board to help us raise much-needed funds to assist our veterans." A video introduction from Buckelew is also available on YouTube.

A portion of each passenger's cruise fare totaling approximately $500,000 will be matched by Princess Cruises with a further $500,000, for a total of $1 million earmarked for the two veterans causes. Funds raised will be shared equally by both organizations.

"We are humbled by such a generous gift and grateful to our friends at Princess Cruises, and we're looking forward to the voyage," said Jan C. Scruggs, VVMF's founder and president. "We thank the company for honoring America's military members, past and present, and for supporting our efforts to ensure their sacrifices and stories will always be remembered."

"Our military families continue to make sacrifices after more than 10 years of war, and the American public has been generous in its support," said Jim Knotts, chief executive officer of Operation Homefront. "We simply wouldn't be able to help these families without donations from companies like Princess Cruises and its passengers. It is significant to note that the gratitude and respect shown by the public to our Iraq and Afghanistan veterans is very different than how our Vietnam veterans were treated. This cruise will allow passengers to express their gratitude to veterans of ALL eras. It is an honor long overdue."

The Western Caribbean cruise will sail roundtrip from Galveston, with a call at Progreso, Mexico.

Cruise fares range from $604 to $1,704 per person based on double occupancy. A portion of each fare ranging from $100 to $300 per person, depending upon cabin category, will be donated to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund and Operation Homefront.

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (November 5, 2012) – Search DescriptionPrincess Cruises has selected the four finalists who will compete in the cruise line’s second annual Entertainer of the Year competition. The competition will be held aboard Crown Princess’ February 9, 2013 sailing to the Western Caribbean, where passengers will then cast their ballots to bestow the honor.

The four finalists competing to hold the title of “Entertainer of the Year” are:

Sarge – A multi-talented film, television and stage entertainer, comedian Sarge not only keeps the crowds laughing from his stand-up performance, but also sings, plays piano and does impressions as diverse as Harry Connick, Jr. and Kermit the Frog for a high-energy show.

Tony Tillman – A dynamic entertainer often compared to Sammy Davis, Jr. or Ben Vereen, Tony Tillman’s fast-paced and energetic style helped him open for Bill Cosby for more than 10 years and star in “The Rat Pack is Back” tribute show in Las Vegas.

Wayne Hoffman – Mentalist Wayne Hoffman puts on shows with high-energy displays of magic and psychological stunts. His down-to-earth and loose style combined with a highly interactive show give a fresh approach to magic and mentalism.

Passengers aboard this select sailing will be able to see live performances from each finalist as well as vote for their favorite entertainer. The winner will be announced on the final night of the cruise at a celebratory event in Princess’ signature venue, The Piazza.

“Last year passengers were wowed by the entertainment lineup on this special cruise, and they really loved picking the winner,” said Jan Swartz, Princess Cruises executive vice president. “With these dynamic finalists we anticipate another show-stopping Entertainer of the Year sailing.”

Finalists were determined by the Princess Cruises Entertainment department based on passenger surveys and onboard audience response.

The winner will receive a $5,000 cash prize and will hold the title of “2012 Princess Cruises Entertainer of the Year.”
