World's Biggest Ship goes through Suez Canal for First Time

The Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller, on its way to Northern Europe, made its very first transit through the Suez Canal on August 9th .

A few days afterwards, the first Triple-E vessel which is the world's largest ship, passed through Gibraltar and got closer to its final destination, Rotterdam.
The ship is scheduled to reach the port Rotterdam today, August 16th.

The Suez Canal, the oldest man-made canal in the world, has been open for traffic since 1869.
The canal is situated in a historically central and important area, considered the centre of global trade for thousands of years.

Almost immediately after its opening, the Suez Canal had a significant impact on world trade as goods were moved around the world in record time. In 1875, debt forced Egypt to sell its shares in ownership of the Suez Canal to the United Kingdom.

However, an international convention in 1888 made the canal available for all ships from any nation to use.

Conflicts immediately began to arise over use and control of the Suez Canal.
The Suez Canal, today operated by the Suez Canal Authority, is one of the world's most significant waterways as it supports 8% of the world's shipping traffic and almost 50 ships pass through the canal daily.

As the Suez Canal is too narrow, all ships must enter through convoys on fixed times.

Maersk Line Takes The Helm On Idling

Marine Insight Photo
Marine Insight talks about the current status of container ships . . .

Among container shipping companies, Maersk Line currently has the largest number of vessels idle.

A report by shipping analyst Alphaliner (Vol. 2012, Issue 46) reveals Maersk Line as the shipper with most vessels idled, currently 14 units with an aggregate capacity of 94,000 TEU.

This development spearheads a recent surge in idling across the industry. “The idle containership fleet of above 500 TEU have swelled by 96,000 TEU in the last fortnight to reach 762,000 TEU or 4.7% of the current cellular fleet as at 5 November,” states the newsletter.

“24 units of above 5,000 TEU are currently idle,” says Alphaliner, “compared to only two such units in early September.” The share of idle fleet for shipping companies has increased to 35%, compared to only 15% in September, states the report.

Erik Rabjerg Nielsen, Maersk Line’s Head of Scheduling and Deployment, explains that “the primary reason for the latest surge in idling is the removal of the AE9 service from the Far East to Europe, currently on hold until at least the end of November. 10 vessels have been pushed out from here.”

Container Ships Offer Alternative Way Home For Stranded Air Passengers

With disruption continuing in the airspace above Europe people are increasingly looking for ways to get to their destinations. And one method which is rapidly being utilised is passage on commercial vessels and container ships.

Kevin Griffin, the managing director of The Cruise People Ltd., an agency that specialises in booking on shipping, said that they had been inundated with requests for sailings.

“On the trans-Atlantic routes, the cruise ships from Florida to Europe are fully booked. There are still some berths available from Barbados, as well as a limited number of berths on container ships, but we expect those to fill by the end of the day.”

And the problem is worse for those seeking to return from Europe to the States. “It’s almost impossible,” said Griffin. “The Queen Mary II is booked solid for the next two trips. All we have are a few spaces in steel carriers.” Griffin added that: “This is a truly global problem. We’re getting bookings for South Africa, Asia and Australia.”

In additional news the UK government has announced that they are to use the Royal Navy to repatriate UK citizens from Spain, with coaches to be provided at Madrid to bring people to the port of Santander for embarkation.

The airlines hopes to resume flying may also have been dashed by a report from NATO that several fighter jets have had to make emergency landings due to engine damage from ash ingestion.

Off Radar Comment
Whilst the Cruise Industry was clearly negatively impacted by the travel chaos of Europe caused by the now famous Icelandic Volcanic Ash cloud, there was an upside especially for transatlantic cruises. Moreover, cruising will be viewed as a less fragile form of travel, especially for multi-embarkation itineraries pioneered by Costa Crociere. Conversely, the recent outbreaks of Norovirus cases on board P&O and Fred Olsen respectively will hard the image of the Cruise Industry in particular from a UK perspsective.
