The U.S. and South Korean militaries announced Tuesday (7/20) a new series of large-scale joint exercises designed to send a strong message to the North Korean leadership in response to its provocative actions with regard to the deadly Cheonan incident.
The first exercise, dubbed "Invincible Spirit", is a combined maritime and air readiness exercise that begins on Sunday (7/25). This and subsequent war games will take place on both sides of the Korean peninsula in the West Sea (aka Yellow Sea) and the East Sea (aka Sea of Japan).
