Costa Cruises further commits to the WWF and marine protection

Designing Cathodic Protection Systems for Marine Structures and Vehicles (Astm Special Technical Publication// Stp)
In the wake of the death of a second whale within a one year period by a Princess cruise ship, another Carnival Group member Costa Cruises has rushed to further confirm its commitment to marine protection following

Costa Cruises has for some time worked in collaboration with the World Wildlife Fund WWF and to support the cause they offer in-cabin collections on board all Costa vessels. Costa Cruises are now increasing their synergy by monitoring whale activity from one of its cruise ships.

More specifically the Costa Pacifica is the worlds first cruise ship to install REPCET, which in essence is a pilot program designed to help reduce the risk of whale strikes whilst simultaneously plotting the movements of whales. The system actively utilizes a global satellite network which reports sightings sent by participating ships, with the goal of transmitting warnings to both commercial and passenger vessels whereby their course may bring them within close proximity to the animals. The project is fully supported by the WWF in Italy, an existing partner of Costa Cruises.

Moreover, Costa Cruises is now joining forces with the Research Centre of the European Commission, and the Costa Pacifica become the quintessential location of a new series of atmospheric measurements, designed for monitoring climate change throughout the Mediterranean.

It is expected that the next round of field observations will be scheduled to commence as soon as next week on board the Costa Pacifica. Weather balloons will feature in these observations to record variations in the concentration of the ozone layer at differing heights above sea level.
