A federal judge ruled late Wednesday that the Army Corps of Engineers' failure to properly maintain the Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet (MR-GO) was directly responsible for flood damage in parts of New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
While this ruling may result in a few plaintiffs receiving over $700,000 in damages, it leaves the government open to potentially having to pay billions of dollars to some 100,000 New Orleans residents, businesses and local governments who have filed flood-damage claims with the Corps.
