Viking River Cruises continues to increase its newbuild orders, in a European fleet expansion that began as a $250 million investment in eight ships and two refurbishments but has grown to an $800 million investment in 24 ships.
Viking Chairman Torstein Hagen insists that paying for and filling the ships will not a problem. The company's only challenge, he said, is building the ships fast enough for what Hagen see as an insatiable appetite for river cruising.
When Viking christened its first two 190-passenger Longships in March, its newest class of vessels, the company revealed plans to launch six of the new ships in 2012 and six in 2013, with the option to order six more in 2014. Those plans have now grown to 10 Longships in 2013 and eight more in 2014, for a total of 24 new ships in three years.
