The shipping and financial press have been reporting that possible merger talks are under way between two historic Hamburg shipping lines, Hamburg-Süd and Hapag-Lloyd Container Line. So it is worth having a look at what this might mean to the cargo-passenger trade, in which Hamburg-Süd is very active. When Hapag-Lloyd merged with CP Ships in 2007 it closed the passenger accommodation on twenty-one CP Ships container ships because it had a policy of not carrying passengers. On the other hand, Hamburg-Süd has quite a well-developed freighter travel section and would probably want to retain it. So it is hard to say which way it might go. One outcome might see Hamburg-Süd’s freighter travel section opening up accommodation on Hapag-Lloyd ships that do not now accept passengers, especially in these lean economic times where passengers can mean extra revenue.
