In 2012 calls to Aalborg numbered seven and passengers 6,451, the best year yet. The season opened on May 30 with a call from Holland America Line’s Prinsendam and closed on September 6 with a maiden call from Cruise & Maritime Voyages’ Ocean Countess.
Feedback from passengers on Ocean Countess was very positive according to Lars Bech, project manager cruises Visit Aalborg. A particular speciality of Aalborg is serving free hotdogs from a Danish hotdog stand at the pier.
Next year there are eight calls scheduled from seven different companies including an overnight call in May from Residensea’s The World. Passengers are expected to exceed 5,000.
Having worked hard on initiatives to increase calls over the past five years (in 2007 there were no calls), Aalborg has decided that now is the time to enter the premier league of the cruise business. In this respect it is extending its marketing by entering into direct communication with the cruise lines with the assistance of associations such as Cruise Europe.
Aalborg has four berths, all in the central harbour and close to the city centre. There is one quay of 400m length and 8.5m draught and three smaller ones which can accommodate ships of up to 250m in length and ranging between 7m and 9m draught.
