Here we go here with Part II of our story about JinHai Heavy Industry Shipyard in China. As we discussed in Part I about who is the company, what their accomplishments have been and what their goals and aims are for the future, we are now going to show you the human side of this story. What are the workers like and what is involved with their lives working for HNA Group and JinHai Shipyard.
I found this side of the story fascinating and different; I could move there tomorrow and work for them. It is rare to find a company willing to talk about their ideals, their wants and their hopes concerning their personnel.
My interview with Mr. GaoJian and Ms Christina Gu continues:
Mr. GaoJian, please are you willing to talk about your employees and how JinHai takes care of their people?
Yes, I am proud to inform you how our organization works.
What is your own personal feeling of working for JinHai?
I am honored and proud to work for JinHai as when I started with HNA Aviation, I was very happy and learned a lot. When I moved over to the manufacturing side of the shipyards, I quickly learned that we had a good concept message with a visible symbol:
- · Ship, Plane and Aircraft Carrier. Quite literally, “we have your back.” In essence, our message base is that airline and manufacturer work together in harmony.
The employees, including Mr. GaoJian, Christina Gu and others, are very well taken care of by their company. Even before the New Labor Laws of China, the company had been following the strict guidance of the laws that were already set; they continue to keep a sound and strong base for content and fulfilled employees.

| Union Member participants in Company Activities |
In today’s job market, it is rare to find a company with a high percentage of satisfied workers. In their 2011 report, their ability to create loyalty is 80% satisfaction with their work, pay and level of life. Those who were disgruntled for personal reasons, later regretted their decision and wanted to return; but, as they say ‘they missed their ship.”
The list of positives of which the company strives to offer are:
- · Five different kinds of health insurances covering health and dental.
- · They have a housing experience - Extra monies allotted to help those in need to purchase a house. And,
- · HNA builds houses; therefore, they can offer housing at a better cost.
- · Unions: (Mr. GaoJian is also the Union Chairman)
- · There are the Department Unions and Company Unions, totaling about 10 unions together.
- · Monthly meetings are mandatory for presenting problems while suggestions are discussed and solutions immediately provided.
- · Equal Employment Opportunity - there is neither discrimination towards women, nor, against a nationality or religion. Mr. Jian jokingly said his wife was the one who hired him. Ms Gu giggled at Mr. Jian statement; however, on a serious note she informed me that women were well respected in the working field and dominated many sections (this concept, I personally did not know and was pleased to hear).
- · The company is people oriented with a management circumspect towards developing a harmonious atmosphere.
- · A family style feeling within the walls of a large corporation.
I asked Ms Christina Gu what she thought of her boss, her boss happens to be Mr. GaoJian, however, she is in their Shanghai Offices. She quietly mentioned that he is a wonderful boss who is fair, strong, extremely intelligent and funny. He is able to find humor when it is needed.
Would either one of these two people leave JinHai Company? No way.
In closing, I think this unique company is perfectly stated in their own words according to their –
Apothegm for HNA Colleagues
Harmony is the basis for collective prosperity;
Perseverance is the rule to sturdy progress;
Careful recipe is the best medicine to health;
Forgiveness is most needed in dispute;
Kindliness to youth endows the superior with virtue;
Diligence leads research to accession of knowledge;
Sincerity is the fundamental in daily life;
Modesty is the best policy in human relationship;
Preparation avoids needless drudgery;
Prudence remains essential in conducting business.
Thank you Mr. GaoJian and Ms Christina Gu for allowing us a glimpse into some of the inner workings of a major contender in the world’s business market. jhzgchina.com
