The Westerdam was forced to return to the port of Seattle, however officials at Holland America commented that there were no passenger or crew injuries on board, which is a relief.
The boiler room fire occurred at around 5pm and was by all accounts quickly extinguished, however it later restarted. A combo of high-pressure mist and trained fire fighting crew with hoses extinguished the fire. No evacuations were needed, the firefighters later reported.
The city of Seattle dispatched a fireboat and some units to the Pier 91 cruise terminal, as a precaution.
The Westerdam was starting a 7-day Alaska cruise when the blaze occurred. Alone this would not be a big deal, however with backdrop of the Concordia, Triumph and other issues, this is another negative news story that Carnival could do without.
