Cruise news: 2012 a year of anniversaries

by Captain Greybeard

AS I mentioned last week, the world of cruising will be dominated by anniversaries in 2012.

Not least by the centenary of the Titanic disaster. Fred Olsen’s Balmoral and Azamara Journey have both been chartered for memorial cruises and will be together over the wreck site on April 15.

Marking a happier event – the birth of the Peninsular Steam Navigation Company 175 years ago – all seven ships of the P&O fleet will be in Southampton on July 3.

It’s not all about looking back. There are six new ships to welcome, although it is unlikely any will make their debuts in the UK.There may well be a traffic jam on the water as they jostle for berths before departing together.

Disney Fantasy, launching at the end of March, will be sailing from Florida to the Caribbean; Oceania’s Riviera, to be named in Monte Carlo in April, will spend summer in the Mediterranean before heading across the Atlantic in November.

Italian-based Costa Crociere and MSC Cruises both have 3,000-plus passenger ships – Fascinosa and Divina – launching in May, Carnival Breeze arrives in June, and Celebrity Reflection, the fifth and final vessel in the Solstice class, will be christened in October.
