Abercrombie & Kent Adds Fourth Antarctica Departure for 2012-13

Abercrombie & Kent added a fourth departure to its Antarctica departures for the austral summer of 2012-13 to meet increased demand. A&K reports that interest in Antarctica is increasing at the same time that fewer ships are making the trip because they are unable to meet new fuel regulations recently adopted by the International Maritime Organization.
A&K’s Antarctic expeditions use the MV Le Boreal, which it claims to be the only all-balcony expedition ship in the region.
A&K has been running the Antarctic tours for 20 years.

“It’s a new generation of adventure cruising. The sleek, stylish and stable design of Le Boreal has made the idea of a voyage to Antarctica much more appealing to travelers who might not have considered it before,” said Scott Wiseman, president of Abercrombie & Kent USA.
“By chartering Le Boreal, we’re able to provide the award-winning service our clients have come to expect from Abercrombie & Kent.”

A&K maintains a ground operation in Chile, which provides support and arranges behind-the-scenes airport access in Santiago, allowing A&K to meet guests at their gate and assist them through customs. On-board programs and shore excursions are conducted in English. Shore excursions in Antarctica are designed to educate and inspire, with a team of naturalists, geologists, historians, marine biologists, ornithologists and photographers who give lectures and provide guidance on board and on shore. With an average of 15 years of experience navigating the challenging Southern Ocean waters, each A&K Zodiac driver is also a certified field naturalist who provides knowledgeable commentary on the twice-daily excursions that take guests into the heart of this once-in-a-lifetime destination.
The guide-to-passenger ratio is one to 12.

This year A&K is offering Classic Antarctica (Nov. 27 to Dec. 10, 2012), priced from $9,896 when booked before March 31, 2012; Fighting Climate Change in Antarctica (Dec. 7 to 20, 2012), from $9,896 when booked before March 31, 2012; Family Holiday -- Antarctica, South Georgia & the Falkland Islands (Dec. 17, 2012, to Jan. 5, 2013), from $15,296 when booked before March 31, 2012; and Antarctica, South Georgia & the Falkland Islands (Jan. 2 to 20, 2013).
