Disney launches details of Disney Dream

Disney Cruise Line has released further details of its newest vessel, the 2,500 passenger capacity Disney Dream, building at Germany’s Meyer Werft and due in service in early 2011.

The 128,000grt, 14 deck vessel is 40% larger than Disney Magic and Disney Wonder, has 1,250 cabins capable of accommodating a maximum of 4,000 passengers, all served by a crew of 1,458. Like the existing Disney fleet the newbuild sports an Art Deco style with touches of Disney whimsy. Technology and animation are used throughout to enhance services and entertainment.

Key features of Disney Dream include The Aqua Duck Water Coaster ride, almost an entire deck for youth activities, sophisticated cocktail lounge with tall windows that depict a different city skyline each day and, on the accommodation side of things, a ‘virtual porthole’ for inside cabins.

One of the highlights from a passengers’ point of view on the new Disney ship is the transparent-tube water coaster, The Aqua Duck Water Coaster, that propels riders high above the top deck of the ship and out over its sides 13ft before dropping them down four decks, a ride of 765ft!

‘Virtual portholes’ give passengers with inside cabins a real-time view by using live video feed from high definition cameras placed on the outside of the ship.

The new ship sports two main spaces for children aged 3-10. Both venues offer interactions with animated characters who chat, play and joke in live, unrehearsed conversations from their digital environments via 103-inch plasma screens.

At Oceaneer Club, children can play among larger-than-life-characters from ‘Toy Story’ in Andy’s Room, explore the Laugh Floor with monsters from ‘Monsters, Inc’ and dive under the sea with Nemo of visit Tinker Bell’s fairy forest. At Oceaneer Lab, a room filled with maps, charts, nautical instruments and artefacts, children can try their hand at animation, become a pop star or navigate ships through digital seas.

Edge, located inside the forward funnel, is the tweens (11-13) lounge, where high-tech entertainment includes the ability to create and star in photo postcards and videos karaoke using green-screen technology. Teens (14-17) get their own club, Vibe, an indoor/outdoor space, spanning nearly 9,000 sq ft where they can create videos, play computer games, access the onboard social media application or spin and mix dance tracks. The outdoor area offers chaise lounges, two wading pools, misters and pop jets, and games like Table Tennis.

Rotational dining continues on Disney Dream as passengers move through three dinner restaurants, their servers accompanying them.  The ship reprises Animator’s Palate. New are Royal Palace, an elegant restaurant inspired by the classic Disney films ‘Cinderella’, ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’, ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and ‘Sleeping Beauty,’ and Enchanted Garden, a casual restaurant inspired by the gardens of Versailles with an environment that transforms from day to night.

Adults-only areas include The District, a night time entertainment space with five venues, and a spa and salon with 17 private treatment rooms plus spa villas with indoor treatment rooms and private verandas.  Disney Dream also reprises Palo, the adult’s epicurean restaurant.
