Acts of Maritime Piracy Surge in 2009

The International Maritime Bureau (IMB) issued its quarterly piracy report on Wednesday (10/21), and according to their figures, the number of pirate incidents worldwide so far in 2009 has already surpassed the total from 2008. In addition, the number of incidents involving armed pirates in Q3 2009 has increased 200% compared to Q3 2008.

According to the IMB, "A total of 306 incidents were reported to the IMB Piracy Reporting Centre (PRC) in the first nine months of 2009, while in 2008, the total number of attacks for the year was 293."

As could be expected, the waters off the coast of Somalia and in the Gulf of Aden remain the global piracy hotspots.
